Serving and former soldiers of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders have been celebrating a landmark in the regiment's history.

A regimental march has taken place in Stirling to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the formation of the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders.

The Sutherland Highlanders regiment was first raised in 1799 and was amalgamated with the Argylls in 1881.

Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders from every section of the regiment have been taking part in a weekend of events.

Regular soldiers were joined by territorials, cadets and retired soldiers and officers.

A commemorative church service has already been held and a grand parade through the town of Stirling was due to be followed by a beating of the retreat on Saturday evening.

Events due to take place on Sunday include an historical pageant depicting 200 years of the Sutherland Highlanders

Organisers said a re-enactment of the Battle of Balaklava, when the Sutherland Highlanders repulsed the charge of the Russian cavalry in 1854, would be one of the highlights.

The soldiers' exploits earned them the famous nickname the Thin Red Line.
