The conference asked for more resources to tackle abuse

The issue was the main focus of the first day of the Annual Scottish Trades Union Congress Women's Conference in Glasgow.

It came weeks after it emerged that hundreds of people have been convicted in the first year of Scotland's only dedicated domestic abuse court.

The conference was told even more needs to be done to raise awareness.

Communities Minister Malcolm Chisholm addressed the event and listened to a debate urging the Scottish Executive to continue its Domestic Abuse, There's No Excuse campaign.

The minister was also asked to increase resources given to Scottish Women's Aid, women's refuges and the Zero Tolerance Respect campaign in Scotland's schools.

Conference chairwoman Janet Cassidy said: "It is essential that we raise awareness of the prevalence of violence and abuse facing women and children and offer positive ways of tackling this along with support and advice. "
