VisitScotland's Ben Carter testing the podcast at the Last Drop Pub |
Visitors to Edinburgh will now be able to listen to virtual tours of the capital on their mp3 players. The pilot podcast can be downloaded from the VisitScotland website.
The tour covers the Old Town, New Town and Leith, providing past and present stories about Edinburgh's landmarks, attractions and pubs.
VisitScotland said that it could be used to give people ideas for their visit or could be played as they walked around the city.
Sites described in the tour include Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scottish Parliament, the hidden warren of Mary King's Close and the Last Drop Tavern.
Tania Dron, from the Real Mary King's Close tour, said: "I think this is a fantastic opportunity for the visitor to hear a first-hand account of what the Mary Kings Close experience is like and increase awareness of the tour to a young market through use of new media."
Chris Lynch, group product manager from VisitScotland, added: "We expect people to use the podcast to help them with ideas for their visit before they come to Edinburgh or as a refresher while they are here."
