Fines plan to tackle gull problem
Gull
Gulls cause problems in urban areas across Scotland
Fines and anti-social behaviour orders could be imposed on people who persist in feeding seagulls in towns and cities across Scotland.

The measures are contained in a report for the Scottish Executive by the British Trust for Ornithology and Stirling University.

It focuses on ways of tackling problems caused by seagulls in urban areas.

Fixed penalty notices are suggested and in extreme cases, jail sentences could be given to people who break orders.

The report, which is due to go to ministers this week, rules out a cull because the population of some birds - particularly herring gulls - is very low.

MSPs held a debate in the Scottish Parliament in 2002 on the subject of problems caused by gulls in towns and cities.
