Views of Scotland's young people
Children with poverty 'banner'
Young people in Scotland have been invited to have their say on the issues which matter most to them.

Scotland's Children Commissioner, Professor Kathleen Marshall has launched a month-long Keeping Promises campaign to gather opinions.

Prof Marshall said the issue which came top of the poll would be her main priority for the next two years.

Topics including making the streets safer, bullying and help for young people whose parents have split up have already been suggested.

BBC Scotland's news website asked what issues matter most to young people.

The Have Your Say is now closed and the following represents the balance of opinions we received.

Anti-social behaviour is a big issue in my life. I work hard, have struggled to get a deposit together and now still work hard to pay bills and keep things together. I now find my life blighted by a neighbour who appears to be "dealing" from his flat, plays loud music and has people round at his door at all hours. I blame the huge rise in buy-to-let properties for this. Whatever happened to 'one person, one flat'?
Andrew Tennant, Glasgow, Scotland

I would like to see more articles like this. It seems that education is increasingly expensive around the world, and more attention needs to be drawn to this fact so that it can be remedied. There are too many young people getting deep into debt just trying to secure their futures.
Loraine, Springville, UT USA

I agree with Sean from Lochaber. I am 25 and currently studying at college locally, and would like to stay on in the area after graduation. However, the cost of local housing renders that train of thought impossible. It is not cheap living on an island as it is, and this is yet another obstacle. I for one, am not going to bring a baby into the world just for the sake of getting a roof over my head! It's a silly notion the council would be well rid of. Don't penalise those living in remote areas. There are young folk who don't want to run to our cities, but are happy living rural lives!
Emma, Skye

Council tax is my major thing. I'm a graduate only earning about 9,000. I live in a flat that costs 550 a month. Between us, my flatmates and I pay about 1,500 council tax for our home. I can barely afford it. Why is council tax based on the property and not how much a person can afford? It's ridiculous.
Fi, Glasgow

The biggest problem for me is not just safety in the streets, but being able to get home at all. After the clubs close in Glasgow there are a few buses, running very infrequently, the subway has already closed far too early to be useful and the taxi queues are miles long and mostly full of groups of young men, which is quite intimidating in itself for a lone female.
Jo, Glasgow

I have an issue with student loans. Why are we issued a fixed amount? Surely, since we are the ones having to pay for it in the end, after we qualify, we should be able to select an amount that guarantees more than just subsistence 'student' living? Going to college or university is for a purpose, where eventually we can give back to the country - so why put obstacles in the way?
Stuart, Glasgow

The biggest problem I have is the 'neds' here who think they are better than everyone else and can do or say whatever they want. I'm 16 and when me and my friends walk down the street and see big groups of teenagers our own age we are all scared that they will say or do something. It sometimes comes to the point where we don't want to go out on the streets at all and usually go to mine or one of my other friend's houses. Also there aren't any cafes or under-18s places that are meant for people who are into different kinds of places and me and my friend end up going into Glasgow. Now we have friends there but very few in Motherwell.
Nadine, Motherwell

The biggest issue in my life and many other people my age in this area is that there are no houses to rent. The cost of housing in this area is a joke as well. I am 20 and live at my parents. The local council say that the only way to get a house in Lochaber is for a female to get pregnant.
Sean, Lochaber

My own house is the issue in my life. I am nearly 20 now and working but I still have to live with my parents because as a trainee to rent a house would cost over half of my wage just for the rent! There are not enough cheap council flats to get people started. All those fortunate enough to have bought properties when they were relatively cheap now expect up to 450 per month rent for a flat. It's a rip-off!
David, Grangemouth

Safety in the streets is a massive issue for myself and many of my student colleagues. As a 19-year-old, it alarms me that I can be scared to walk home at night through Glasgow city centre because there are groups of young people who stand on street corners, drinking and heckling innocent passers by. It annoys me that these people are allowed to intimidate the public in this manner. If the majority of young people can happily survive childhood and early adulthood without shouting at people in the street, then why should those who do get away with intimidating those of us who need to work in the evenings in the city centre. Why should I be scared of other young people?
Sinead, Glasgow

People don't seem to care about litter. It's not just fly-tipping that is a problem. People drop fag ends, wrappers, chewing gum anything. Even when there is a bin right next to them. They don't seem to realise it is themselves that end up paying for it to be cleaned. It comes down to plain laziness and ignorance, they pretend they don't care but if the streets weren't to be cleaned they'd complain. They'd also be the first to complain when council tax goes up to pay for their mess.
Ali, Glasgow

Student loans are the biggest issue in my life. Why do I have to get into debt to study at university?
