The campaign aims to increase awareness of MRSA |
Health chiefs and nurses in NHS Lothian are joining forces in a new effort to combat the MRSA hospital superbug. Administrators and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in Scotland will be working together over the coming months to try to tackle the bug.
Information packs on infection control and prevention will be given to staff.
Leaflets and posters aimed at patients and visitors will be distributed in a further attempt to raise awareness of the problem.
Health board chairman Brian Cavanagh said: "This is a very serious issue affecting too many patients within the NHS.
"It is completely unacceptable for patients to become ill when they have entered a hospital or care home to improve their health and wellbeing."
Ward closed
RCN spokeswoman Susan Lloyd said: "There is a lot of misinformation about MRSA.
"The measures we are highlighting will only work if we all implement them rigorously.
"It will not be easy, but it is no less than patients deserve."
A ward at Dundee's Ninewells Hospital was closed last week after an "unusually high" number of patients tested positive for the superbug.
NHS Tayside said it had been shut as a precautionary measure to prevent any spread of the infection.
