Gleneagles Hotel will host the July summit |
The extra cost of policing the G8 summit at Gleneagles will be met by the Scottish Executive, the finance minister has said. Tom McCabe told Holyrood's European and external relations committee that Edinburgh and Perth and Kinross councils will receive financial help.
Senior police officers say the event will cost tens of millions of pounds.
But Mr McCabe declined to speculate on cost, saying it could be used by those planning to disrupt the summit.
Last week, Chancellor Gordon Brown pledged 20m towards the cost of policing the event, but the Scottish National Party said the Treasury should foot the bill in full.
The committee is taking evidence by videolink from the International Development Secretary Hilary Benn and is looking at the opportunities for Scotland to influence and benefit from the Gleneagles summit.
Mr McCabe is also expected to be asked for more information about how security for the event will be paid for.
Tom McCabe said he did not want to speculate on the summit costs |
Opposition parties have pressed the executive on the cost of providing security after First Minister Jack McConnell said up to 10,000 police officers could be called in.
The Scottish National Party believes the cost should be met exclusively by the Treasury in London.
The summit in July will see Prime Minister Tony Blair joined by leaders from the world's richest countries, including US President George Bush, Russian leader Vladimir Putin and France's President Chirac.
Plans are being drawn up for an exclusion zone around the famous Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire after violent protests at previous G8 summits.
