The collection belonged to an elderly man from Fife who gave it to Taylor's Auction Rooms in Montrose when he moved to a retirement home.

A cap which once belonged to Crosby sold for �240 while a signed photograph fetched �150. Figures for total sales will not be available until next week.

Crosby made 60 films and had hundreds of hit records around the world.

'Most extensive'

Ian Taylor, owner of the auction rooms, said the seller had been a member of Bing Crosby's fan club for years.

He said the collection had attracted considerable interest from across the world.

About 300 people attended the sale.

He said: "This must be one of the largest collection of Bing Crosby records in the world and probably the most extensive Bing Crosby collection in Scotland.

"We have hundreds of 78rpm records, posters and a pipe which we believe belonged to Bing.

"They have been very well stored and looked after.

"So far there has been a fair bit of interest, particularly in the records, and inquiries have been coming in to our website.

"Bing Crosby had an amazing career and I think that is reflected in the interest that has been shown."
