'Childish behaviour' at Holyrood
Baby at parliament Bookstart event
One toddler gets a taste for politics
Babies took over the Scottish Parliament's debating chamber for National Bookstart Day, a scheme to promote reading.

About 100 children, parents and community workers descended on Holyrood - with one toddler even commandeering the first minister's seat.

Susan Deacon MSP, who hosted the event, said there was "nothing more important than investing in the next generation".

Bookstart offers free books to children and advice to their parents.

Ms Deacon said the scheme's concept was simple, but was well-researched and proven to have a positive impact on children's learning and literacy skills in later life.

"It is about involving parents in sharing books, rhymes and songs with their children from a young age," she said.

"Above all it is enjoyable for parents and worthwhile for their children."

After the teddy bears' picnic within the formal parliament building, the youngsters were given the opportunity to play in the parliament's crche facilities.
