MSPs have given their support to a second bill aiming to bring trams back to the streets of Edinburgh. Two Holyrood committees were set up to consider the proposals being promoted by Edinburgh City Council.
Last week MSPs backed the principles of the line two bill, which would link Princes Street to Newbridge.
The committee considering the line one bill, for a loop serving northern Edinburgh, said it should also pass to the next stage - despite funding fears.
MSPs expressed "concerns about the funding for the bill, the trams' likely usage, as well as the scale of the benefits that the tram would bring".
Environmental benefits
However, they said in a report that the council was committed to updating them on these issues before any final stage consideration of the bill.
The committee said the proposals could bring "transport, socio-economic and environmental benefits" to the local and regional economy.
Convener Jackie Baillie said the line, serving St Andrew Square, Leith, Granton and Haymarket, could address the growth of congestion in Edinburgh and its potential detrimental impact on the capital's economy.
