Robin Cook will be remembered for his commitment to his constituency

The service at West Lothian College was organised by the council to allow locals to pay tribute to the man who was their MP for more than two decades.

Gaynor, Mr Cook's widow, and his two sons from his first marriage also attended the hour-long service.

Mr Cook, who was 59, died last month after collapsing while hillwalking.

Provost Joe Thomas said it was important to provide a local service, following his funeral at Edinburgh's St Giles Cathedral in August.

"We wanted to provide an opportunity for local people to remember the work and commitment that Robin Cook gave to the community," he said.

A Labour spokesman said another memorial service would be arranged when the Commons returned from recess to allow party staff and officials to take part in a political celebration of Mr Cook's life.

'Fearless champion'

At Sunday's ceremony, Cllr Thomas led tributes to Mr Cook.

He said: "All of us in the constituency and further afield have lost a champion who was fearless and, by his deeds, proved his own integrity.

"He was transparently honest at the top level to the extent that he was prepared to, and did, sacrifice his own political career in support of his political convictions."
