Arts bodies give report response
Art exhibition
The future of the arts has been outlined by the commission
Scotland's arts organisations have met to discuss a major new report into future funding.

The Cultural Commission's 500-page report was published in June, but some organisations felt a response from the Scottish Executive had been too slow.

Up to 30 organisations had their say on the 124 recommendations in a report at the meeting organised by Green MSP Chris Ballance.

He said that the report was in danger of being sidelined.

Its call for an extra 100m funding to implement the report were being ignored, Mr Ballance claimed.

Home and abroad

Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson said the report was far from forgotten.

She spoke at the conference because she felt she had already spoken to most of the arts organisations involved.

In the next few weeks the minister plans to debate the findings of the report in parliament with her fellow MSPs.

The commission, chaired by former Radio 4 controller James Boyle, called for a new body called Culture Scotland which would help develop Scottish culture at home and abroad.

The other main thrusts included the introduction of a Culture Bill by 2007, the creation of a new deputy culture minister post for Scotland and a tax support scheme for artists.

It also wanted cultural rights ensuring that every person in Scotland could share in any publicly-funded cultural activity.
