 Hewlett Packard hopes job cuts will help save $2bn a year |
Several hundred Scottish jobs could be in jeopardy, under computer giant Hewlett-Packard's plans to lay-off 6,000 workers across Europe. The company has six sites in the UK, including the former Compaq factory in Erskine, near Glasgow.
Hewlett Packard said a consultation would now take place with employee representatives.
It is not clear how job losses will be spread across Europe, and a spokesman said it could take months to finalise.
Conservative MSP Annabel Goldie said the Scottish Executive needed to take a tougher stand to protect the jobs.
'Neutered tomcat'
"I think the Scottish Executive has got to show it's prepared to come out roaring like a lion, instead of padding around like a neutered tomcat," she said.
The company announced in the summer that it hoped to cut about 10% of its global workforce as part of a plan to reduce costs by nearly $2bn a year.
Three years ago nearly 700 jobs were lost at Erskine. And a year later another 250 jobs were transferred to an agency when the company consolidated its operations onto one site.
