Charlie Gordon was named as the Labour candidate |
Labour and the Scottish National Party have named their candidates for the Glasgow Cathcart by-election. Former Glasgow City Council leader Charlie Gordon will fight the seat for Labour, while former local headteacher Maire Whitehead is the SNP candidate.
The by-election, on 29 September, was caused by the resignation of Labour MSP Mike Watson after he admitted a wilful fire-raising charge.
The Lib-Dems, Tories and Greens have yet to announce their candidates.
The Scottish Socialist Party has already named its candidate, Unison shop steward Ronnie Stevenson.
Maire Whitehead was a headteacher at local schools |
Lord Watson held a majority of 5,112 over the SNP in the 2003 Scottish Parliament election.
Mr Gordon was chosen as the Labour candidate after a hustings meeting on Friday night.
He said: "I'll now be taking the message of Labour's delivery to the streets of Cathcart."
The SNP's candidate has fought the seat twice before, at Holyrood and Westminster elections.
Ms Whitehead, who was a headteacher in the area for 30 years, has been active in the campaign to protect services at the Victoria Infirmary.
She said: "The people of this area feel let down by the behaviour of their last Labour MSP and they are angry and disappointed by the failures of the Labour executive."
