The European grant is for a total of 2.675m.
'Premier cultural venue'
Mr McConnell said: "The Eden Court Theatre has been the premier cultural venue in the Highlands for 30 years.
"But now it is time to update, expand and modernise it to match the cultural ambitions of the Highlands in the 21st century.
"The Highlands are enjoying a cultural renaissance that is leading the way in Scotland. It is time to celebrate all aspects of that culture, reflecting the traditional past, contemporary strengths and future aspirations of the region.
"That is why I am delighted to be involved in the Year of Highland Culture, and this investment in Eden Court will be a huge boost to the plans for 2007."
The theatre, which first opened in 1976, has already received a Scottish Executive capital grant of 5m.
