Motorists experienced delays on the first of two days of roadworks on the Forth Road Bridge. The northbound carriageway was closed from 1900 BST on Friday to allow engineers to inspect the structure's main cables from 0300 BST on Saturday.
The Forth Estuary Transport Authority said there were delays of 25 minutes northbound and 40 minutes southbound.
The contraflow was lifted at 1200 BST on Saturday, four hours earlier than expected. Work was resuming on Sunday.
The restrictions were expected to be in place from 0300 to 1600, and more work is planned in two weeks' time.
Feta said repairs were ahead of schedule, which meant that the restrictions would be in place for fewer weekends than originally planned.
Operators said the project, which would enable an assessment of the internal condition of the main cables, was the first of its kind outside the US.
