Police force doubles drugs haul
Cocaine haul
The force said dealers will face long prison sentences
Police in Lothian and Borders have hailed the success of an operation which has more than doubled the amount of drugs seized.

Drugs with a value of 1,535,101 were seized since April last year. That compared with 626,257 in roughly the same period in 2003.

A senior officer said the force's anti-drugs initiative, Operation Foil, had been a big success.

He also warned dealers that the crackdown would continue.

A raid in Drum Terrace, Edinburgh, on Thursday netted drugs worth 100,000 and this brought the total since April over the 1.5m mark. Three men in their 20s were arrested in that operation.

Other major seizures included:

  • Cocaine worth more than 500,000 which was discovered in a car stopped on Queensferry Road, Edinburgh, on 11 November, and the arrest of three people

  • The seizure of heroin worth 100,000 and the arrest of a man at Waverley Train Station, in Edinburgh, on 28 October

  • The discovery of 250,000 worth of heroin, cannabis and other drugs and the arrest of a man in June 2004.

The force also said its summer Dump the Dealer campaign in East Lothian led to police receiving more than 100 reports of drug dealing

Deputy Chief Constable Malcolm Dickson said: "Taking 1.5m worth of drugs off our streets is a major achievement. Countless drug dealers have been arrested and many of them put behind bars.

"Our message to dealers is simple - we will track you down, arrest you and you will appear in court facing long prison sentences."
