Weather at-a-glance
This is how the weather has affected Scotland on Wednesday.

  • A trawler with 19 mainly Portuguese crew on board was missing off the Western Isles. It has been located but is drifting without power

  • The Dornoch Bridge, Erskine Bridge and the Kessock Bridge are closed. The Forth Road, the Friarton, the Skye and Cromarty bridges are open to cars only. The Tay Road Bridge is closed to double decker buses

  • The Kincardine Bridge in Fife and the Kingston Bridge in Glasgow are open

  • The M8 eastbound between Edinburgh and Glasgow is closed at Harthill because of problems with the overhead gantry, but was expected to re-open at about 1500 GMT

  • Many roads, particularly in the Western Isles and on the west coast, are blocked by fallen trees

  • First ScotRail had cancelled all services but is gradually restoring trains on routes where possible. The Glasgow to Edinburgh link is now running a full service

  • Caledonian MacBrayne and P&O ferry services from the west coast and the north are cancelled. Decisions to sail will be made on a sailing by sailing basis

  • All schools in the Highlands, Orkney and the Western Isles are closed. A number of schools are closed in Aberdeenshire and Fife

  • Flights to and from the Western Isles were cancelled but other services from Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow appeared to be departing largely on schedule.

  • Thousands of homes are without electricity and phone lines.
