It is felt the Commonwealth Games would help regenerate Glasgow |
The opening shots in a "hearts and minds" campaign to bring the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow have been fired by the sports minister. Patricia Ferguson has told key decision-makers that Scotland is "the natural choice" for the event.
She made her case at a meeting in Glasgow of the European Commonwealth Games Association.
It includes representatives from England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Cyprus and Malta.
Also present were delegates from New Zealand and Uganda.
'Seize opportunity'
First Minister Jack McConnell threw Scotland's hat in the ring by officially backing Glasgow's bid earlier this week.
The cost of staging the games is estimated at 250m, which would be split 80%-20% between the Scottish Executive and the city.
Ms Ferguson, speaking before the meeting, said: "These are some of the people who will decide which country wins the right to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
"It is important we seize the opportunity and go flat out to tell them why Scotland is the natural choice to host the games - our unrivalled passion for sport, our breathtaking scenery, our vibrant cities and cutting edge culture."
She added: "The Commonwealth Games are recognised by athletes and spectators alike, as the Friendly Games.
"Glasgow in 2014 will uphold those core values and enhance that particular title.
"If Glasgow is the host, Scotland is the extended family that can share the excitement and pride in that achievement."
