Flights are back to normal at Kirkwall after a lightning strike |
Normal service has been resumed at Kirkwall Airport in Orkney after a lightning bolt blew out equipment. Engineers have repaired the damage caused by the strike which knocked-out navigation systems, runway lighting and communications on Tuesday.
Flights were delayed and cancelled and a daylight only service was in operation on Wednesday.
However, workers have now managed to fix the affected systems and full operations were returned on Thursday.
Between eight and 10 inbound and outbound flights from the airport were cancelled after the bolt reduced a lighting mast "to rubble" and caused an electrical surge.
Paul Clarkson, general manager for Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), said: "As far as the public are concerned it is business as usual. We will be ensuring that everything is completely upgraded today."
Experts from National Air Traffic Systems (Nats) rectified the airport's navigational problems while electrical contractors from Wick and Inverness dealt with the lighting system.
HIAL operates 10 airports throughout the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.
