An eight-year-old boy was fatally injured after his bike was involved in a collision with a van at 1310 BST on Saturday near Elgin, Moray.

The young victim, who lived locally, was taken by ambulance to Dr Grays Hospital, Elgin, where he later died.

In the second incident a 13-year-old cyclist died following a collision near Aberdeen involving a motorbike.

The accident on Saturday afternoon happened on the Aberdeen to Alford road near the Kirkton of Skene junction.

The road was closed and diversions put in place while investigations into the incident were carried out.

Grampian Police have issued an appeal for any eyewitnesses to come forward.

The eight-year-old died following an accident on Murray Street, New Elgin.

A Renault van involved in the collision was being driven by a 17-year-old man, also from the Elgin area. He was uninjured.

Witnesses interviewed

Inspector Ian Wallace of Grampian Police said: "The death of a young child in a road collision is a devastating tragedy, and our thoughts are very much with the family at this time.

"We believe that the white Renault van was travelling north on Bezack Street, when the pedal cyclist emerged from Croft Road and the collision occurred.

"The weather conditions were particularly fine, and we know there were several people walking in the area.

"Traffic department officers have already interviewed a number of witnesses, but we are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time, and who has not yet spoken to police."
