Climate change and emissions are being examined

The Environment and Rural Development Committee's inquiry will examine policies in the context of the UK's international responsibilities.

Committee convener Sarah Boyack said: "The focus will be on practical changes that will improve Scotland's record on climate change."

The executive launched its own review last week.

Ms Boyack added: "This inquiry will be the first time the Scottish Executive's policies for addressing the crucial issue of climate change have been scrutinised by the Scottish Parliament.

"We hope the committee's inquiry will have a very positive influence on the shape of future policies, both to reduce emissions and to adapt to climate change.

"The issue of climate change is going to have a very high political profile in 2005. Tony Blair has already said that it is one of the biggest issues facing the world, and has made it a top priority for the G8 summit at Gleneagles in July."

Interested groups and individuals are asked to submit written evidence by Friday, 28 January. The report is expected to be published in March next year.
