Tommy Sheridan issued a statement after the SSP meeting |
Former Scottish Socialist Party leader Tommy Sheridan has "drawn a line" under the events surrounding his resignation. Mr Sheridan issued a written statement following a meeting of the party's national council on Saturday, which formally accepted his departure.
He again denied any suggestions his stepping down was provoked by a leadership challenge or infighting.
More than 100 activists attended the meeting and issued a vote endorsing the stance of the party on the issue.
Afterwards party members refused to disclose the exact nature of the decisions taken during the meeting.
In his statement Mr Sheridan backed the agreed party line.
It read: "The SSP has today shown great maturity in reaching a unified position on the way forward.
"I would like to take this opportunity to confirm that my resignation as party convenor has nothing at all to do with internal power struggles.
"There is not and never have been any internal squabbles or backbiting about a leadership challenge. We are a party of principle and action.
"We have drawn a line under these internal deliberations".
