Barnardos says there has been a rise in internet abuse among children |
A leading children's charity has claimed there is an increasing number of children in Scotland who are being "groomed and abused" via the internet. Barnardos Scotland wants child protection services to understand the huge dangers posed by the internet.
It wants more to be done to support the child victims of this kind of abuse and is hosting a conference in Edinburgh on Tuesday to highlight its concerns.
Charity staff have reported a rise in online abuse claims.
The conference will bring together a number of agencies - including the Scottish Executive - in an effort to identify new ways of supporting victims of net-based abuse.
It will stress the importance of safe use of the information superhighway and new mobile phone technology.
The charity is also calling for a national audit to identify the extent of the problem and develop safeguards.
