The proposed site near Dalmellington would straddle the border between East Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway.

Energy firm Amec said that the project would produce 300 megawatts of power.

If the scheme wins ministerial approval Amec hopes to begin construction in 2007. The site would take in parts of the Kyle and Carsphairn forests.

Final layout

David Hodkinson, the managing director of Amec's wind energy business, said: "This proposal has gone through many changes since we first consulted with the community in November 2003.

"Through careful site design and our consultations with bodies such as Scottish Natural Heritage, we have ensured that the final layout is sympathetic to the existing landscape and topography of the surrounding area."

Scottish Natural Heritage has given its approval for the 8,000-hectare site to be used for wind farm development.

Local projects

A conservation plan will be put in place to protect local areas of blanket bog and species such as the black grouse.

The proposals also include the creation of a community fund through which local residents would receive about �300,000 every year for local projects and groups.

Mr Hodkinson said this reflected the size of the proposed wind farm.
