Record response to smoking survey
Smoking
The executive will decide soon on a possible smoking ban
A record number of people have responded to a government consultation on smoking in public places.

A total of 53,948 Scots took part in the survey, making it the most popular consultation the Scottish Executive has ever held.

Health Minister Andy Kerr said it was clear that the topic had sparked an "incredible" level of public debate.

The consultation ran from June to September. Respondents submitted their views by post or via the internet.

'Strong views'

Mr Kerr said: "This is a truly unprecedented response to any government consultation ever held in Scotland, almost 40 times bigger than any other executive consultation.

"I would expect that a number of strong views will emerge from the responses.

"We have made it clear that we are committed to introducing more smoke-free public places in Scotland."

Mr Kerr said that the cabinet would discuss the matter further on 10 November with an announcement soon after.

Smoking kills an average of 13,000 people in Scotland every year and is responsible for thousands more hospital admissions.

The country has the highest rates of lung cancer in Europe for both men and women, with most cases caused by smoking.
