Retail sales in Scotland are booming |
Scotland's retailers are to attend a conference with news that sales figures in 2003 outperformed the UK as a whole. Domestic and international tourism are said to be contributing factors to the improved retail performance.
The Scottish Retail Consortium says it wants to look at ways to consolidate the industry's success and find new ways to help it grow.
But it warns that rising costs and proposed new legislation threaten the recent success.
At a conference at the Lighthouse in Glasgow on Tuesday, industry leaders will be buoyed by Scotland's performance.
Retailers, politicians and economists will look at how Scotland can encourage investment and retain its competitive edge.
Earlier this month, the Scottish Retail Sales Monitor revealed sales in May were up almost 5% on May last year.
Good weather meant healthy sales of summer goods and Scots were more likely to spend money on games and DVDs than people in other parts of the UK.
