Drive for record breaking golfers

Sir Steve is seeking golfers to get in the swing for charity
Olympic hero Sir Steve Redgrave has launched a drive to tee up more golfers for a world record attempt in aid of a children's charity.

The five-times champion oarsman is giving muscle to a bid for the most rounds of golf on a course in a day.

Britain's most successful gold medallist has a target of more than 600 golfers for the effort.

It is hoped at least 75,000 will be raised for the Children's Hospice Association for Scotland.

The charity - backed by the Sir Steve Redgrave Charitable Trust - is building a new hospice at Loch Lomond, adding to its existing one in Perthshire.

Golfers last year raised 75,000 when 490 players took part in a Guinness World Record at St Andrews Bay in Fife.

Sir Steve said of Saturday's challenge: "I am really looking forward to getting back on the tee at St Andrews Bay and trying to both break our own record and beat last year's fundraising total.

"I hope golf fans from around the country will join me once again."

Organiser Paul Coffey said: "While we've been getting golfers registering consistently this year, we've also had a number of cancellations recently which have left us short of our target."

He added: "We're appealing to any golfers who are planning on playing a 'bounce' game next Saturday, to consider playing it at St Andrews Bay on the Torrance Course as part of this event."

Competitors, one as young as eight, will find themselves alongside not only Sir Steve, but also Taggart star James MacPherson and Tory leader David McLetchie.

The 10m hospice at Balloch, West Dunbartonshire, is needed because of pressure on the original site in Kinross.

Film star Ewan McGregor, whose family home is in Perth, is a keen supporter of Rachel House and the new unit, Robin House.

Full planning permission was granted by the Scottish Parliament last year and the hospice is scheduled to open this summer.

The go-ahead followed an outcry when an official recommended permission be refused because the site lay within the new Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

Teams can enter this weekend's game as a fourball at a cost of 200 or individuals can secure their tee time for a minimum of 50.
