The Scissor Sisters will perform at the Edinburgh street party

Organisers have confirmed that the groups would front the Concert in the Gardens at the Royal Bank Street Party on 31 December.

The news has been welcomed by city dignitaries and organisers of the Hogmanay celebrations.

Edinburgh's Lord Provost Lesley Hinds said the street party promised to be the place to bring in the New Year.

In a statement, Blondie said: "Blondie are thrilled to be taking part in Edinburgh's Hogmanay which promises to be a spectacular global celebration to ring in the New Year."

New wave punk

Allan Watt, head of external communications for the event sponsors, the Royal Bank of Scotland, said the headline acts would add an international appeal to the Hogmanay party.

Peter Irvine, director of organisers Unique Events, added: "It's fantastic that Edinburgh's Hogmanay audiences will be the first ever to see these two great New York bands on the same stage."

Blondie emerged from the New York new wave punk scene in the 1970s.

Severe weather forced the cancellation of last year's event

Fronted by Debbie Harry, they attracted a large following and recorded their first album, Blondie, in 1976.

One of their most famous hits is 1979's Heart of Glass, which sold more than a million copies in Britain and was a number one hit in the US.

The band split in 1982, but reformed in the 1990s and released their seventh album, No Exit, which included the number one hit, Maria.

The Scissor Sisters have exploded on to the music scene with their edgy, infectious sound.

The five-piece from New York have already had a string of hits including Laura and Take Your Mama, and released their new single, Mary, this week.
