Laws put a dampener on fireworks
Hogmanay firework display
Exceptions to the new regulations will be made at Hogmanay
Tough new regulations to combat the misuse of fireworks are now in force across Scotland.

Anyone setting off fireworks between 2300 BST and 0700 BST can be fined up to 5,000 or sentenced to six months' imprisonment.

Exceptions will only be allowed for a handful of events like Bonfire Night, Hogmanay, Chinese New Year and during the Hindu festival of Diwali.

However, it will still be illegal to set them off after certain hours.

Finance and Public Service Reform Minister Tom McCabe welcomed the changes and said: "I am sure everyone has enjoyed well-organised fireworks displays or used domestic fireworks safely at home.

"But the irresponsible use of fireworks can create untold misery for many people and pets in communities across Scotland.

"Introducing this curfew means that people can still enjoy fireworks but their anti-social use is made unacceptable."
