Fire services in Scotland received nearly 8,000 hoax calls last year, with almost half of those made in Strathclyde, it has emerged. The figures were released to coincide with the UK's first hoax call awareness week.
The campaign, which involves telecoms firm BT and the emergency services, aims to educate children to think twice before maliciously dialling 999.
A total of 67,000 hoax calls cost UK-wide emergency services �24m last year.
Strathclyde Fire Brigade has one of the highest hoax call rates in the UK.
It received more than 4,400 last year, nearly four times as many as the second worst affected Scottish brigade, Lothian and Borders.
