Larsson canvas up for auction
Painting of Henrik Larsson
The picture shows Larsson in familiar pose
Scottish artist Peter Howson has turned his attention to football to commemorate the scoring exploits of the Celtic striker Henrik Larsson.

Howson is best known for his distinctive figurative paintings of the Bosnian war and the singer Madonna.

The Swedish footballer is depicted on canvas celebrating a goal in a painting which is to be auctioned to raise funds for an alcohol abuse charity.

It is hoped the Larsson portrait will raise as much as 50,000.

That money will go to the Third Step organisation.

Howson said he chose a player with a clean living reputation to support the charity with which he is associated.

He said: "It would be great if Larsson bought it, that would be fantastic.

Howson joked that Rangers may buy the painting
"It would be great if Celtic bought it as well...so Larsson, Celtic, Rangers?

"I don't know. Anyone, anyone really, it just depends, someone that's got a big heart."

The funds will be used to help recovering alcoholics who have been through the Castle Craig clinic.

John Mullen, from Third Step, said: "We are going to try to set up a three-quarter way house, this will break them back in, give them the work ethic, we hope, and put them back into society."

Henrik Larsson will also receive half the proceeds to give to his chosen charity and 1,000 prints of the painting will be reproduced and sold.
