The festival will bring together varied styles |
The UK's first music festival dedicated to piping has been launched in Glasgow. Piping Hot - the Glasgow International Piping Festival - will take place in August alongside the World Pipe Band Championships.
Organisers say they want to bring forward a broader and more modern showcase of piping.
The profile of the instrument has been helped by pop diva Madonna who recently signed up pipers for her forthcoming world tour.
Piping Hot aims to challenge the perception of piping with contemporary and experimental music from established and emerging performers.
Roddy MacLeod, director of the festival, said: "People do tend to have a stereotypical view of what a piper is and the image of the pipe band and the piper in the mist on the hillside.
"But there really is a lot of great piping going on, it's constantly evolving, it's a very dynamic scene with real cutting edge performers."
The event will include workshops and discussions as well as free performances by a number of the artists in the city's George Square.
