Bowmore is one of only two British companies nominated |
A small Scots distillery has been nominated for a coveted European green award, it has been announced. Bowmore Distillery saw off competition from across the continent to make the final 12 shortlisted for the European Awards for the Environment 2004.
Among its green credentials, Bowmore heats the local swimming pool on the Hebridean island of Islay with waste heat from the distilling process.
Four winners will be selected from the shortlist for the awards.
It it due to take place in Brussels on 1 June.
Bowmore is one of only two British companies nominated for the honour.
EU Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstrom, who will present the awards, said Bowmore was one of a growing number of firms placing a green agenda at the heart of its business.
Andrew Rankin, Bowmore's director of production, said: "Our distillery has been here since 1779 and we're keen to ensure our environment is protected for a further 225 years at least."
It is the latest environmental accolade for the single malt whisky maker, which was recently judged to be British Green Champion.
The distillery beat giants Scottish and Newcastle and Schweppes in the Food and Drink category of the National Green Apple Environment Awards 2003.
And in 2002 Bowmore was the world's only distiller to be awarded two quality awards for environmental practice.
