Support groups and nicotine patches are the best way for Scotland's 800,000 smokers to kick the habit, according to NHS guidelines. Used in conjunction, the two methods are said to quadruple a smoker's chances of giving up.
Health professionals have been hearing the revised guidelines on stopping smoking, in order to provide the most up-to-date advice.
Funding for smoking cessation groups is to increase to 7m next year.
Smoking ban
Smoking cessation groups are now available in every health board area in Scotland.
More than 27,000 people have responded to the government-sponsored consultation on smoking in public places in Scotland.
The Scottish Executive said the issue had prompted 20 times more responses than any other consultation exercise undertaken by the administration.
The public consultation on a ban is due to run until the end of September.
