Two RAF bases in Scotland are threatened with closure |
Plans to run down or close one of two RAF bases in the north east of Scotland would be disastrous for the region's economy, campaigners have warned. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is reviewing UK air force bases as part of its spending review with RAF Kinloss and RAF Lossiemouth earmarked for cuts.
It is feared any closures would lead to a huge loss of jobs in the Moray area.
Enterprise and council officials met government representatives in London to discuss the MoD plans.
The representatives held talks with Scotland Office Minister Anne McGuire and later briefed MPs on the Commons Defence Select Committee on what the base closures and cuts would mean to the local community.
They were joined by local MP Angus Robertson who said it would be an economic catastrophe if either base closed or was hit by the MoD cutbacks.
The reorganisation was announced by Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon amid a raft of other proposals to streamline all military operations across Scotland.
