Franz Ferdinand want to wow the Scotland team |
Glasgow band Franz Ferdinand have revealed they want to record the official song for Scotland's World Cup campaign in 2006. Following their Mercury Music Prize win, frontman Alex Kapranos said the band had written a song for the team.
He said they would belt out the song at an upcoming matinee show in Glasgow.
Kapranos revealed that the song has three notes and one word - "everyone can work out what the word is".
The band will play their World Cup offering during a gig for younger fans at Glasgow Barrowlands on Saturday 16 October.
Speaking to Xfm, Kapranos said: "We've written what we'd like to be the Scotland 2006 World Cup song and we're going to debut it at the kids show.
"It's got three notes and one word. I think everyone can work out what the one word is."
Scotland's playing squad decide on which band they would like to record a World Cup song.
Del Amitri sang Don't Come Home Too Soon for Scotland's 1998 campaign, while comedian Andy Cameron offered the overly optimistic We're on the March With Ally's army in 1978.
Scottish Football Association spokesman Andy Mitchell said the most important thing was that the team qualified for the finals.
Here are your views on who should record Scotland's next World Cup song and the lyrics it should contain. The Have Your Say is now closed. Franz Ferdinand are only 'popular' because the current music scene is so dire. Can't see them inspiring anyone. Better with something more 'Scottish'.
Neil MacLeod, Carnoustie
Who cares, after last night's display it's fairly obvious that we are not going to need a 2006 World Cup song.
Brian McHugh, Glasgow, Scotland
We need someone with passion to stir the team. I suggest the late, great Alex Harvey - his voice from beyond the grave would be enough to take us all the way to the World Cup!
Bill Stitt, Edinburgh, Lothian
Franz Ferdinand should sing the song, but adapt the lyrics from their single, "Michael", to fit into a Scotland theme.
Michael Mackie, Huntly, Aberdeenshire
Maybe we should have "Tartan Army - oh we're gallus" to the tune of the Dead Kennedys' "California Uber Alles"
Max, Bishopbriggs
I think we need something a little more motivational than indie rock. A Death Metal song would rouse the team and the fans and strike fear into the hearts of the opposition.
Owen Duffy, Glasgow
We may as well ask Elvis Presley because we have as much chance of qualifying as he does of recording a new song for us. Although Berti could do a cover of Don't Be Cruel when it all goes wrong.
Iain, Edinburgh
"Three notes and one word" - surely that's more of a radio jingle than a song?
Andrew, Edinburgh
No-one should bother recording a World Cup song, since the way we are playing we simply won't be there.
Jamie McCulloh, Peebles
It's a little presumptious of anyone to talk about our World Cup song before we even qualify. Leave the automatic presumption of qualification to the English media.
Mark McDonald, Aberdeen
The death of one Franz Ferdinand started a world war, let's hope the success of this Franz Ferdinand can unite the nations and lead Scotland past the first round this time.
Robin, Edinburgh
As our team are always punching above their weight we need something a bit different. What about the Beta Band?
Andy, Glasgow, Scotland
Not sure about Franz Ferdinand. Might bring back too many memories of 1978 - their music and image do anyway.
Paul, Glasgow
I don't really care who records it, as long as it's entitled Anyone but England!
Murray de Schot, Amsterdam(Ex-Scotland)
Franz Ferdinand? No thanks. I feel we should be getting behind our German manager Berti Vogts - how about a David Hasselhoff track, or something by those esteemed Krautrock behemoths - The Scorpions?
Murphy, Edinburgh
Franz Ferdinand are great and will definitely be the best band for the Scotland 2006 song, although we need to get there first!
