Commuters have been warned to expect considerable delays during major resurfacing work on the Forth Road Bridge in forthcoming weeks. Traffic will be prevented from travelling southbound over 16 weekends, beginning in 10 days' time.
A contraflow system will be put in operation but bridge managers warn drivers are facing major disruption.
Queues are expected to last up to eight hours during the busiest spells of the weekend.
The 40-year-old bridge is a key trunk road in Scotland's road network.
However, with the volume of traffic which uses the road bridge each day, the surface in places is so badly cracked that engineers fear water could seep through and damage the steel deck of the bridge.
Bridge managers said the planned repairs need to be carried out sooner rather than later.
They are advising drivers to seek alternate routes - or allow extra time for their journeys - while work takes place.
