Richard Turner died trying to save the woman
Police have named a man who drowned after jumping into the River Clyde in Glasgow to save a woman.

Two men jumped into the river at Clyde Street on Friday afternoon. One man and the woman were pulled to safety by police divers.

Strathclyde Police recovered a body at about 2000 BST that evening.

The dead man was named as Richard Turner, 40, of Allison Street, Glasgow. The woman was taken to the city's Royal Infirmary for observation.

Divers and the Glasgow Humane Society lifeboat were involved in the search.

I could only pull her so much, I maybe helped but I didn't save her

Dave Crawford jumped into the water but said he could do little to save the other man.

He said: "I could only pull the woman so much, I maybe helped but I didn't save her.

"I had to let her go. Ricky went under the water and I tried to get him, but I couldn't.

"So I got the woman and that was the best I could do."

George Patronage, of the Glasgow Humane Society, said the river was dangerous despite its calm appearance.

He said: "It looks flat and calm, but it's so cold and the currents are so deep and the volume of water is moving so quickly that it is very, very dangerous."
