Almost 100,000 more passengers used Glasgow Airport |
Glasgow has become the first Scottish airport to break through the barrier of handling one million passengers in a month, according to the latest figures. BAA Scotland said the number of people travelling through the airport rose by almost 10% on last year's figure amid strong demand for international travel.
More than two million people used BAA's three Scottish airports in July, a rise of 9.4% on last year.
Passenger numbers were up by 10.2% at Edinburgh and 5.1% at Aberdeen.
Those increases took their respective figures to 795,600 and 255,400, with the Aberdeen figure helped by a 5% rise in helicopter traffic.
The number of passengers travelling through Glasgow rose by almost 100,000. BAA Scotland managing director Donal Dowds said: "The fact that Glasgow Airport has recorded more than one million passengers in a single month is clearly the highlight of yet another set of impressive figures, but it comes as no surprise to me.
"Scotland's international schedule has been considerably strengthened in recent months with some of the world's leading airlines joining Scots success stories such as flyglobespan and Zoom in serving our major cities and connecting Scotland with key markets.
"This country's airports are evidently in good health and BAA's long-term investment and development programme, which will see 500m pumped into Scotland's airport infrastructure over the next 10 years, will surely contribute to sustained future success."
Traffic for the year was up by 4.5% to the end of July, with almost 18.7 million people passing through BAA's Scottish airports.
BAA's UK airports - which also include Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted - handled a record 14.2 million passengers in July, a rise of 8% on last year.
