Scotsman downsizes Saturday paper
The Scotsman
The paper will reduce in size on Saturdays
The Scotsman is to convert its Saturday edition from a broadsheet into a "compact" version of the newspaper.

The paper, which was first published in 1817, says it is taking into account views of how it should meet the changing demands of the marketplace.

Research has shown that readers would "welcome and enjoy the experience of a compact edition of The Scotsman".

The paper is following the lead taken by The Independent and The Times, which now publish tabloid-size editions.

'Dialogue' with readers

The Scotsman editor, Iain Martin, said: "The new Saturday compact edition... will contain all the authority and substance of the broadsheet while being more convenient.

"Our research has carefully monitored the views of our readership and now I want to continue with this dialogue.

"The readers will be part of this latest development in the long history of Scotland's national quality newspaper."

The Monday to Friday editions are to continue being published in the traditional broadsheet format.

Figures for the period between 29 December 2003 and 1 February 2004 show The Scotsman's daily average circulation was 70,744 copies.
