'Leads' in teenager murder probe

Police are following up significant leads in trying to find the killers of a 15-year-old Glasgow schoolboy.

Kriss Donald was snatched by a group of five men near his home in south Glasgow on Monday and found dead the next day in the east end of the city.

Officers are trawling through CCTV footage and making house-to-house enquiries. They claim to have come up with several positive lines of inquiry.

They are still trying to establish a motive for the teenager's death.

They said it was still too early to say if the murder was racially motivated.

We believe from our inquiries Kriss was attacked and died in the area where his body was found

However, police believe the killing may be connected to a 19-year-old friend's relationship with a girl.

The teenager was with Kriss when he was abducted and detectives are now trying to trace his girlfriend.

Detective Superintendent Elliot McKenzie, the officer in charge of the investigation, said: "The 19-year-old had a relationship with a coloured woman, not necessarily Asian, but we cannot trace her.

"We have had a terrific response from the public and I'm sure there are individuals out there who know the motive and we would hope they come forward."

'Narrow the timescale'

They have narrowed down where and when the Bellahouston Academy pupil died.

Mr McKenzie said: "We believe from our inquiries Kriss was attacked and died in the area where his body was found.

"However, we are still very anxious to find out what happened between the time of the abduction and when he was found.

"We know it happened sometime between 1600 GMT on Monday and 0700 GMT on Tuesday.

"It is important we try to narrow the timescale of when the murder took place."

The victim was abducted from Kenmure Street in the Pollokshields area of the city, not far from his home in nearby McCulloch Street, shortly after 1500 GMT on Monday.

He had been walking with a friend who managed to escape.

Officers said Kriss was forced into a silver Mercedes or BMW car after a struggle with at least five men, who are described as of Asian appearance.

His badly beaten body was found by a cyclist on the Clyde footway near the Celtic Supporters Club on London Road at about 0700 GMT on Tuesday.

Officers from the Underwater Unit and the Support Unit have now been drafted in to scour the area and the nearby River Clyde.

'Senseless attack'

Senior officers have described the attack as "brutal" and "senseless" and are now appealing for witnesses.

Mr McKenzie said: "The response from the public has so far been encouraging and we are following a positive line of enquiry.

"More than 60 officers are involved in the case and are trawling through CCTV footage, doing house-to-house inquiries and following a number of leads.

"The area where Kriss's body was found is popular with cyclists, joggers and walkers. There are also well-maintained allotments near the murder scene.

"If anyone was working on their allotment or indeed used the pathway between those times, I would ask they contact the incident room at London Road on 0141 532 4750."

Mohammed Sarwar MP
Mohammed Sarwar said people were "united" to catch the culprits

Labour's Glasgow Govan MP Mohammed Sarwar warned right-wing extremists may attempt to cause trouble in the wake of the killing.

Mr Sarwar acknowledged racial tensions had flared up in the area about six months ago, but police action and community meetings had calmed the situation.

He said: "All the communities in Glasgow and Pollokshields are united to catch these culprits.

"We have to be very cautious that we don't allow the BNP and other right-wing organisations to exploit this tragedy to harm the race relations we have enjoyed over the years in Glasgow.

"There were problems in the past, but one thing is certain, there are only a few people, who I believe are thugs, causing disturbance and trouble in this area, and police are well aware of these people."

Steven Purcell, convener of Glasgow City Council's Education Services Committee, said the death had shocked the city.

He said: "This death is a tragedy not just for the pupils and staff at Bellahouston Academy, but for the whole city of Glasgow.

"At this point in time our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of Kriss Donald."
