Protection for child witnesses is being looked at |
Measures giving greater support for child witnesses giving evidence in court have been discussed by some of Scotland's top lawyers. Deputy Justice Minister Hugh Henry told a seminar in Edinburgh that much needed to be done to ensure young witnesses get the guidance they need.
The Scottish Parliament is currently considering new measures contained in the Vulnerable Witness Bill.
Mr Henry said the bill represented a step towards a fairer system.
He said: "We need to ensure that every individual and organisation throughout Scotland's justice system supports witnesses in practice.
'Much to do'
"That is why I am very encouraged by the initiative of the Faculty of Advocates in raising awareness through training seminars like this.
"I know that much needs to be done to improve practice. Bringing about a culture change within the justice system will not happen overnight.
"But we must all play our part including the executive.
"A new victims and witness unit has now been established and funded by the executive within the justice department. "
This new unit will is designed to improve agency contact with victims and witnesses.
