A pay-by-mobile phone parking scheme has proved "a huge success" since its launch in Scotland's capital, officials have said. About 1,400 people have signed up to use the technology in Edinburgh, paying for parking using a mobile.
The scheme is already on the way to meeting its first-year target of 10,000 transactions a month.
A total of 266 mPark solar-powered pay and display machines are currently in place across the city.
'Easy alternative'
Andrew Burns, Edinburgh council's executive member for transport, said he was delighted with the performance of the system.
He added: "I am confident that we can reach our target for the first year of operation.
"Motorists are taking advantage of this major innovation, which provides an easy alternative to cash payment.
"We have led the way in the UK with investment in this type of technology, and expect that other cities will soon be using the system too."
The scheme, which enables a pay-and-display ticket to be billed direct to a credit card or to an account, was launched in the city centre in October.
