Party-goers are advised to watch their alcohol consumption
New Year revellers are being reminded of the dangers of binge drinking as the nation gears up to celebrate Hogmanay.

The Scottish Executive's chief medical officer, Mac Armstrong, urged people to be sensible with the amount of drink they consume.

He said: "People who binge drink need to understand that the effects can be serious."

"It can lead to major long-term health problems and drink fuelled deaths devastate friends and family."

Mr Armstrong continued: "Too often during the festive period, staff in already busy accident and emergency departments have an extra load to deal with, treating injuries that are a direct result of too much alcohol.

Plan ahead

"We can all enjoy the festive period without drinking to excess.

"I hope people do have fun with friends and enjoy their favourite tipple with good food and entertainment.

"If you are attending an outdoor event on Hogmanay, wrap up against the cold weather and make sure you plan in advance how you are getting home.

"And very importantly, if you are going to have to drive this New Year - don't drink at all."
