Donald Baxter (left) and Iain Ray await the Santa Claus auditions |
Pop Idol style auditions have been used in Dundee to whittle down a selection of Santa Claus "ho-ho" hopefuls to just one Father Christmas. Six potential Santas were put through a rigorous audition process in the style of the successful TV programme.
Donald Baxter, 68, from Forfar, emerged successful.
Mr Baxter, who has 35 years of experience behind the white beard, won the right to be Santa at Tourist Information Centres in Dundee and Arbroath.
Each prospective Santa was tested on his jolliness factor, suitability for the colour red and bell-ringing skills.
They were also quizzed on their customer service and quality control policies and to see how well suited they are to appearing with huskies.
Each wannabe Santa had to perform in front of a panel of people from the local tourist board.
Chairing the judging panel was Angus and Dundee Tourist Board chief executive Colin Smith, who adopted the persona of Pop Idol's Simon Cowell.
'Absolutely delighted'
He told one Santa he was not jolly enough, another that he looked a bit grumpy and one was let down with "don't call us, we'll call you".
Speaking after the competition Dr Smith said: "Some of the Santas were excellent, although I think there were one or two iffy ones to be honest.
"We actually had some really experienced Santas coming for the auditions, which added to the competition."
After his victory, Mr Baxter said: "I'm absolutely delighted. I'm over the moon, and I suppose that's exactly where I will be soon."
He added: "I'm looking forward to meeting all the children. The secret is to be reassuring towards them, then you can't go wrong."
