The TB bacterium disables the body's defences |
Health officials are investigating a confirmed case of tuberculosis involving a Glasgow woman. The affected woman, who was originally screened during an outbreak linked to a city pub just over a year ago, is receiving treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
Anyone who has come into close contact with the woman, who has not been named, is being offered screening for the disease.
A spokeswoman for NHS Greater Glasgow said it was currently investigating a confirmed case.
She added: "The woman, who was offered screening during the TB outbreak at the Lord Darnley pub just over a year ago, is being given appropriate treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
"Close contacts of this person, including those who are customers at the Maxwell Arms pub in Glasgow's southside where the woman is a regular, have been offered screening.
"Public health officials say there is no additional risk to the general public, including patrons of the Maxwell Arms who are not close contacts of the woman."
A total of 170 people were screened in Glasgow after the death of two men who contracted TB at the Lord Darnley pub in the Pollokshields area of the city last year.
Eddie Weldon, 74, and John Calderwood, 56, who were both customers, died of illnesses related to the infection in May and September 2002.
Five others were diagnosed with the disease after a cluster of cases which were traced back to a former barmaid at the pub.
