Train slams into quad bike
Police are searching for the rider of a quad bike which was hit by a train as it was driven along a railway line.

The incident happened near the village of Maybole in South Ayrshire and left the train driver severely shocked.

Officers with dogs have been combing the area where the collision occurred in case the rider was injured.

The wreckage of the four-wheel drive bike was dragged along the track under the 2325 Stranraer to Ayr train for several hundred metres.

Inspector John Harrington, of British Transport Police, said: "The driver of the quad bike has had a miraculous escape as have the staff and passengers on board the train.

"The train could easily have been derailed and I dread to think of the consequences if that happened.

"I am very concerned regarding the safety implications of this incident and I am particularly disturbed that somebody has used the railway almost as a roadway."

He appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
