Efforts to increase recycling in Glasgow have been awarded funding totalling almost �10m. The Scottish Executive cash will enable the city council to introduce kerbside collections of steel and aluminium cans, glass, paper and plastics.
The money will also be spent on research into recycling technologies and upgrading the municipal refuse facility at Polmadie.
Details of the �9.4m award from the strategic waste fund were announced by Environment Minister Ross Finnie.
He said: "The Scottish Executive is committed to transforming Scotland's record on waste reduction, recycling, composting and recovery.
"This funding will help ensure many households across Glasgow have access to recycling facilities.
"By funding recycling initiatives such those announced today, we are helping councils meet their recycling targets, and ensuring as many people as possible have the opportunity to recycle."
He added that people also needed to reduce the amount of waste produced.
Glasgow City Council will receive just over �1m in 2003/04, �4.1m the following year and almost �4.3m in 2005/06.
