The bridge will link Broomielaw and Tradeston

Six design teams have been chosen by Glasgow City Council to take part in a competition to create a new pedestrian and cycle crossing.

It will link the waterfront regeneration areas of Tradeston and Broomielaw.

The judging panel will take into account the views of the public and a group which will carry out a technical evaluation of the plans.

Exhibitions will be held in the Lighthouse and the Glasgow Science Centre this week, along with Springburn, Tollcross and Scotstoun Leisure Centres.

The designs can also be viewed on the glasgowbridge.com website, where members of the public can have their say on the proposals.

Judging panel chairman Charlie Gordon, the leader of the city council, said that the public's views would play an important part in the decision-making process.

"All of the designs are outstanding, innovative and highly contrasting," he said.

"However, we want to look at each design with a fresh eye - we don't want to be influenced by who designed what in the past.

"I am delighted with the enthusiastic and professional response of so many world-class architects and engineers to our competition.

"Glasgow deserves a landmark, iconic bridge over the River Clyde which is now springing back to life as a place where people live, work and enjoy themselves."

The six teams have worked on high-profile projects such as the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Falkirk Wheel and Canary Wharf.
